Helping Children on the Autism Spectrum

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is known as a challenging, complex, and long-term condition that is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide.

Often, a diagnosis of autism can come as a shock and can be an overwhelming experience for all involved.

Consequently, this presentation focuses on empowering parents, caregivers, and teachers, and professionals so they can better understand and address the needs, strengths, and difficulties of children on the spectrum.

“Helping Children on the Autism Spectrum” will give a fundamental understanding of the who, what, where, why, and how of autism by:

– Exploring the diagnosis, characteristics, and global statistics of autism; -Reframing problem behaviors by taking an attachment and person-centred perspective;

– Surveying interventions available (including evidence-based, emerging, and alternative practices)

– Giving practical tools and strategies so parents, caregivers, and teachers can work collaboratively to respond to the unique needs of children with autism.

Cierra Chmiliar

Registered Psychologist and Registered Play Therapist

Cierra Chmiliar is a Registered Psychologist and Registered Play Therapist in Alberta, Canada. She gained her undergraduate degree from the University of Alberta, and her Masters of Counselling degree from City University of Seattle. She currently works in a private practice specializing in working with children, teens, and families using a variety of types of therapy. Her background includes both personal and professional experience working with children with developmental disorders (including Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD). She has also been a passionate horse person throughout her life, leading to a specializing in canine- and equine-assisted therapy.

Cierra approaches her clinical and consultative work with parents and professionals with an attachment, developmental, and neurobiological lens. Her aim is to work together to best serve the unique and individual needs of every child.
