The Institute of Child Psychology believes in social responsibility, and giving back to our global community is an important part of our mission. As such, in partnership with our sponsors, we will be donating a portion of ticket sales to support the mission of CAMFED, Canada.

CAMFED envisions a world in which every child is educated, protected, respected and valued, and grows up to turn the tide of poverty.

As the most effective strategy to tackle poverty and inequality, CAMFED multiplies the educational opportunities available for girls, and empowers young women to become leaders of change. Our focus is on girls and young women in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa. This is where girls face acute disadvantage and where their empowerment will have a transformative impact. Mastering the Art of Attachment with the Children in our Care

An understanding of the pivotal role of attachment in the lives of our children is certainly increasing. Most caregivers – parents and professionals alike – now appreciate the fact that attachment is our preeminent need and that facing separation is our greatest threat. This insight certainly helps make sense of children (and ourselves) but how does one translate the theory of attachment into everyday practice? And how does one practice attachment when it is neither a skill set nor a set of behaviours? And how does one nurture and foster the attachments between children and other adults the child is in need of?

In this keynote address, Dr. Neufeld will talk about mastering the art of attachment. The dance of attachment is the oldest human dance – primal, primordial and primeval. As we continue to lose the cultures that preserved this instinctive dance, we need science more than ever to help bring it back into our consciousness. The principles discussed will apply to any attachment relationship, marriage included, but our focus will be on dancing with the children in our care.

Biography:

Dr. Gordon Neufeld is a Vancouver-based developmental psychologist with over 45 years of experience with children and youth and those responsible for them. A foremost authority on child development, Dr. Neufeld is an international speaker, a bestselling author (Hold On To Your Kids) and a leading interpreter of the developmental paradigm. Dr. Neufeld has a widespread reputation for making sense of complex problems and for opening doors for change. While formerly involved in university teaching and private practice, he now devotes his time to teaching and training others, including educators and helping professionals. His Neufeld Institute is now a world-wide charitable organization devoted to applying developmental science to the task of raising children. Dr. Neufeld appears regularly on radio and television. He is a father of five and a grandfather to six.

The Impact of Trauma and Neglect on the Developing Child

The development of a young child is profoundly influenced by experience.  Experiences – good and bad – shape the organization of the brain which ultimately impacts emotional, social, cognitive and physiological functioning.  Insights into this process come from understanding brain development.  Trauma and neglect, which is the absence of essential developmental experiences required to express a fundamental potential of a child, are both pervasive problems in our culture. Similarly, chaos, threat and abnormal patterns of emotional, social, cognitive and physical interactions with young children lead to an array of brain-related problems with life-long implications for mental and physical health. This presentation will review clinical work and research that can help us better understand developmental trauma, neglect and the relational problems that arise from adverse experience and then suggest new directions for clinical practice, program development and policy.

Biography:

Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D. is Principal of The Neurosequential Model Network, LLC and Senior
Fellow of The Child Trauma Academy, a Community of Practice based in Houston, TX. He is
also Professor (Adjunct) in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the
Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago and the School of Allied
Health, College of Science, Health and Engineering, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Victoria,
Australia. Dr. Perry is the author of over 500 journal articles, book chapters and scientific
proceedings. His clinical research over the last ten years has been focused on integrating
emerging principles of developmental neuroscience into clinical practice. This work has resulted
in the development of innovative clinical practices and programs working with maltreated and
traumatized children, most prominently the Neurosequential Model © , a developmentally
sensitive, neurobiology-informed approach to clinical work (NMT), education (NME) and
caregiving (NMC).
