Certification in Children's Mental Health Fundamentals

The Institute of Child Psychology Certification in Children’s Mental Health Fundamentals is designed for individuals who are wishing to receive formal accreditation from the Institute of Child Psychology for continuing education, employment purposes, and/or personal development. With this certification you are demonstrating your knowledge in the areas of: introductory child psychology, essentials of interpersonal neurobiology, attachment-based interventions, child emotion regulation, and evidence-based parenting practices.

You have up to 2 years* to finish the course requirements below.

As long as you are a membership subscriber (monthly or annually) all the courses needed for certification can be taken as part of your subscription; you DO NOT have to pay for individual courses.

IS A CERTIFICATE PROVIDED?

Certificates will only be mailed to Canadian residents. Individuals residing outside of Canada will be emailed a PDF copy.

Certification Steps

Learn the steps to certification and get answers to frequently asked questions.

1. Complete 6 core courses
2. Chose 9.5 credit hours from the supplemental courses
3. Complete a 3-5 page essay- single spaced, 1500-2500 words on ” Creating a pathway to healing: Research, tools…..”

The paper must be APA formatted
Your paper must incorporate findings from your course work with ICP as well as 10 citations from evidence-based, academic sources (i.e., journals, books)

Compassionate Discipline

Approx. 6.5 hours of Instruction. Final Quiz to be completed, 20 Questions This course will begin with an overview of neurological development of children and how this accounts for their struggles with emotion regulation and impulse control. A thorough overview of attachment will be covered: parents will be able to identify and comprehend their current attachment style with their child, how that impacts behaviour, and how to strengthen the attachment should their be issues with connecting.

Childhood Anxiety: Helping Children Heal

Approx. 9.5 hours of Instruction. Final Quiz to be completed, 30 Questions Anxiety has many faces, and in this online course parents, caregivers, and professionals will learn about the psychological and physiological roots of anxiety, why it is on the rise in our children, and what to do to help children better manage it. This course has a holistic* and strength-based approach that focuses on what we as caretakers, parents, and professionals can do vs. stigmatizing children who are struggling. Various facets of the child’s environment will be explored that can contribute to a child’s emotional struggles.

Once all requirements are complete, you are required to write a 3-5 page conceptualization paper on:

Creating a Pathway to Healing: Research, tools, and strategies to help children move from negative mental health outcomes to resiliency.

Certification must be complete within 2 years* Extensions to complete certification will be considered on a case by case basis.
