Has your child or a child you are supporting experienced physical or sexual abuse? Exposed to the foster care system? Suffered through a tragic event? Experienced neglect? Witnessed or experienced violence? Endured extreme bullying? Or been impacted by a high-conflict divorce?

During this seminar we will explore the impact of trauma on neurological development and how this presents in children’s behaviours. The impact on the attachment system will also be examined, as will the role of relationship in healing and growth. Strategies to support children following experiences of trauma will be presented, giving attendees concrete ways in which they can support the children in their lives and care for themselves.

This workshop aims to offer practical information to caregivers and professionals on why certain behaviours may be present, and how they can support their children in moving towards growth and healing.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Examine the impact of trauma on neurological development
  • Explore the impact of trauma on attachment systems and relational patterns
  • Foster a greater understanding of behavioural patterns commonly associated with traumatic experiences.

Exploring Gender Identity & Sexual Orientation in Youth

At what age do children understand gender? Want to understand how main stream society and our youth are classifying and identifying gender and sexual orientation?  How do we talk to kids about gender and sexual orientation? Maybe you have a child struggling to come to terms with their own gender and sexuality and you want to understand what is going on for them.

LGBTQ, 2SLGBTQIA, lesbian, gay, straight, bi-sexual, pansexual, demisexual, Two- Spirit, asexual, aromantic, transgender, cigender, binary, non-binary, genderqueer . . . It’s an overwhelming topic for our kids but even more so for adults. OBJECTIVES:

  • Explore the latest research on gender identification and sexual orientation
  • Identify terminology and the importance of understanding how children and youth view themselves and their gender or sexuality
  • Understand the difference between gender and sexual orientation, and how it develops over time
  • Explore ways to talk to children and youth about their own or others sexual orientation or gender identification
  • Identify resources in the community to support children who are struggling

Building Emotional Regulation Skills In Children

Is your child struggling with minor anxiety, defiance, tantrums, meltdowns, and overall emotion dysregulation?

A child’s emotions can be draining for everyone involved. This workshop will empower parents and caregivers to proactively and lovingly help children during these challenging moments.

Emotional regulation is a key component that supports our overall health and well-being. As our capacity to regulate our emotions increases, so does our ability to engage positively with all parts of our world. This had the impact of enhancing our ability to communicate our needs, limits, and boundaries in a clear and effective way. Strengthening a child’s emotional vocabulary and supporting them to develop emotional regulation skills is an important part of ensuring that our children are growing with the skills and knowledge they will need for healthy relationships at all stages of life.

This workshop aims to provide practical information for caregivers and professionals about the importance of self-regulation in both ourselves and the children we are supporting, as well as to focus on strategies that we can use with the children we are supporting to enhance their development of self-regulation skills.

OBJECTIVES

    • Introduction to the neurobiological and developmental of emotions in children
    • Exploration of triggers which fuel emotional dysregulation
    • Identifying tools and strategies for coping with big emotions
    • Discussion on the significance of connected relationships
    • Explain how the brain develops throughout childhood and how each stage of development will guide us on how to navigate challenging situations with our child.
    • Build a toolkit of simple strategies and techniques to help you turn chaotic interactions into bonding experiences

Do you have questions on sleep, diet, environment and mental health? Tired of only getting snapshots on how to truly create wellness for your family? Frustrated by multiple streams of conflicting information?

Join Dr. Bjorndal, Licensed Naturpath, Acclaimed Speaker and Author, for an afternoon that will change the way you approach wellness. The Therapeutic Power of Animals: Exploring Animal Assisted Therapy

Are you in the mental health or education field and thinking of integrating animal assisted therapy (AAT) into your practice? Maybe you’re a caregiver who wants to know more about what AAT is and how it can possibly help your child? Interested in exploring if an emotional support animal is right for your family . . .

Adding animals to your practice, or family,  adds cost and complication, but the benefits can be astounding: teens who can’t or won’t engage in traditional approaches show up and flourish; kids who seem unreachable develop empathy and compassion; and the animals present ways for youth to explore, both experientially and ‘one step removed’, areas of need or pain which they may not be ready or able to touch directly.

This workshop will introduce you to the growing field of animal assisted therapy and how it relates to treating children. Attendees will explore the benefits from engaging with animals, and how practitioners integrate animals into their practices in an ethical way– for both children and the animals.

NOTE: There will be therapy animals at this event that participants will have time to engage with, along with a demonstration of a variety of techniques/strategies specific to Canine and Equine Assisted Counselling (some live and others recorded)

OBJECTIVES:

  • Exploration of Animal Assisted Therapy
  • Understand the role and needs of the animals in these fields; including the ethics involved
  • Gain insights regarding the human-animal bond and it’s subsequent health and psychological benefits
  • Explore strategies and techniques relevant to AAT specific to children
  • Understand the varieties of modalities you can train in and what organizations to work with to have your animal screened or trained in AAT

The Making of a Resilient Child

Resilient kids are confident problem solvers, critical thinkers, independent, motivated,  have a high self-esteem, and are courageous in navigating life’s challenges. This course equips you with the tools to help your child, or the children in your life, to live a resilient life.

Resiliency is the ability to embrace a world-view that boosts psychological well-being, while also developing interpersonal skills that promote connection and joy.

In nurturing resiliency- based skills early on in life, you proactively guide your child, or the children you work with, towards living a life of courage, authenticity and passion. This course focuses on practical skills to hep your child, or the children you work with, to develop GRIT, to foster a Growth Mindset, to enhance social and emotional intelligence, and to face life with braveness, kindness, and gratitude.

Childhood Trauma: Finding a Way Through

Has your child or a child you are supporting experienced physical or sexual abuse? Exposed to the foster care system? Suffered through a tragic event? Experienced neglect? Witnessed or experienced violence? Endured extreme bullying? Or been impacted by a high-conflict divorce?

Trauma can significantly impact a child, and those caring for them are often left with questions about how to best help. Children with trauma can present significant challenges, and they often display patterns of behaviour that can strain the relationship between the child and those caring for them.

During this course we will explore the impact of trauma on neurological development and how this presents in children’s behaviours. The impact on the attachment system will also be examined, as will the role of relationship in healing and growth. Strategies to support children following experiences of trauma will be presented, giving attendees concrete ways in which they can support the children in their lives and care for themselves.

This course aims to offer practical information to caregivers and professionals on why certain behaviours may be present, and how they can support their children in moving towards growth and healing.

Understanding the Sensitive Child

Does this sound like your child or a child you work with: struggles with emotional reactivity, appears to be impacted by sensory issues, broods over failures, takes things personally, deeply impacted by others emotions, easily withdraws if overwhelmed, thinks deeply about things, deeply rich inner life, doesn’t do well with change, highly conscientious, and perceptive?

A highly sensitive child [HSC] is one of the fifteen to twenty percent of children born with a nervous system that is highly aware and quick to react to everything. This makes them quick to grasp subtle changes, prefer to reflect deeply before acting, and generally behave conscientiously. They are also easily overwhelmed by high levels of stimulation, sudden changes, and the emotional distress of others (Aron, 2018).

In this online workshop parents, caregivers, and professionals will learn to better understand these children and ways to help them manage in the home and the classroom.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Identifying whether a child is highly sensitive
  • Exploring struggles that accompany these types of children and possible solutions
  • Understanding how parenting style can impact HSC
  • Develop strategies to build resiliency in HSC

Children who have experienced optimal environments tend to have a greater ability to make decisions, exhibit greater physical and emotional control, have a fuller self-understanding, engage in stronger relationships, and are able to excel in new and challenging experiences.

Join our Co-Founders, Tammy Schamuhn and Tania Johnson, as they take you through 10 concrete lessons to better understanding the developing brains of children and teens. This course was designed to easily make sense of, and nurture, optimal childhood brain development.

Understanding the Highly Sensitive Child

In this workshop parents, caregivers, and professionals will learn to better understand these children and ways to help them manage in the home and the classroom.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Identifying whether a child is highly sensitive
  • Exploring struggles that accompany these types of children and possible solutions
  • Understanding how parenting style can impact HSC
  • Develop strategies to build resiliency in HSC

Helping Children Through Grief and Loss

Has your child recently experienced the loss of a loved one or a pet? Have they been required to move or change schools? Are they experiencing the separation of their parents? Are they struggling with a loss of trust, safety or faith? Regardless of the type of loss, watching your child grieve can be one of the most profoundly difficult experiences for caregivers.

Grief is a normal and natural reaction to a loss in an individual’s life however, even though we all experience it, we are often left struggling or feeling isolated and confused when we grieve. These same feelings can apply to our children. Adults and children alike will be told to “wait for time to heal” or “move on” and “be strong”. While usually well-meaning, these responses do not recognize the pain we actually carry after a loss. Fortunately, there are steps that caregivers can take to recognize the emotional incompleteness that a child carries and to help them heal their hearts. This session will provide you with a set of skills and a new sense of empowerment that will allow you to better recognize grief within your child and help them move towards recovery after a loss.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Define grief and recognize the 40+ different types of losses that could contribute to it

Understanding The Highly Sensitive Child

Cultivating Resiliency In Children

Resilient kids are confident problem solvers, critical thinkers, independent, motivated,  have a high self-esteem, and are courageous in navigating life’s challenges. This course equips you with the tools to help your child, or the children in your life, to live a resilient life.

Join the Institute of Child Psychology for a course packed with the latest interpersonal neurobiology on resiliency. Although individual temperament plays a factor in resiliency, it is primarily a learned skill. As Dr. Ungar, from the Resilience Research Centre, states: “Resilience is both the capacity of individuals to navigate their way to the psychological, social, cultural and physical resources that sustain their well-being, and their capacity individually and collectively to negotiate for these resources in culturally meaningful ways” (http;//resilienceresearch.org).

OBJECTIVES:

  • Introduction to the neuroscience of resiliency
  • Tools and tips on fostering Social and Emotional Intelligence
  • Discussion on helping kids to make mistakes, take risks, and embrace failure
  • Examining tools that nurture  confidence and strength in children
  • Exploring a Growth Mindset verse a Fixed Mindset
  • Cultivating habits to develop kind, empathetic, courageous kids

Being at your Best when your Kids are at their Worst

Feeling like you have a hard time staying calm when your child is defiant, angry or disrespectful? Not at your parental best? This workshop with Kim Payne will help you to rediscover your parenting voice, prioritize important family values and nurture connection and happiness. Participants will leave with a small, do-able, powerful plan that works.

Grief and Loss

Animals & Their Impact Mental Health
Helping Children on the Autism Spectrum
“Helping Children on the Autism Spectrum” will give a fundamental understanding of autism’s diagnosis, characteristics, and triad of impairments,  as well as why prevalence is increasing worldwide. This course will also explore evidence-based approaches and practices, and give practical tools and strategies so parents, caregivers, and teachers can work collaboratively to respond to the unique needs of children with autism.
The Power of Play: A Key Tool in Fostering Resilience

In this course will learn to understand your child’s play and the benefits to using (and encouraging) “play” to help your child develop resilience. We will also explore how play is related to development of the brain, and how play deprivation can adversely affect children. Strategies on how to engage with your child in their play to help them overcome issues related to anger, sadness, trauma, difficult transitions or behavioural issues will also be explored.

The Impact of Technology on Children and Youth

Are you wondering how to handle screen use in your home or classroom? How much screen-time should should you allow every day ? When should your child get a phone? What the impact of technology on your child’s ongoing development? Are you feeling frustrated by technology overload in your home? Ready for a roadmap on how to maximize the benefits of technology while nurturing your child’s emotional, social and cognitive potential? The use of technology in homes has increased rapidly over the past decade. Although helpful in many ways, it has also triggered many questions. In this workshop, parents and professionals will explore concrete, research-based strategies geared to help children and teens manage screen use. This online workshop will empower the adults in a child’s life to make informed, practical decisions regarding technology use at home and in the classroom.

Understanding the Highly Sensitive Child

Does this sound like your child or a child you work with: struggles with emotional reactivity, appears to be impacted by sensory issues, broods over failures, takes things personally, deeply impacted by others emotions, easily withdraws if overwhelmed, thinks deeply about things, deeply rich inner life, doesn’t do well with change, highly conscientious, and perceptive?A highly sensitive child [HSC] is one of the fifteen to twenty percent of children born with a nervous system that is highly aware and quick to react to everything. This makes them quick to grasp subtle changes, prefer to reflect deeply before acting, and generally behave conscientiously. They are also easily overwhelmed by high levels of stimulation, sudden changes, and the emotional distress of others (Aron, 2018).
In this workshop parents, caregivers, and professionals will learn to better understand these children and ways to help them manage in the home and the classroom.

Childhood Anxiety: Helping Children Heal

Anxiety has many faces, and at this workshop parents, caregivers, and professionals will learn about the psychological and physiological roots of anxiety, why it is on the rise in our children, and what to do to help children better manage it.

Children with trauma can present significant challenges. They often display patterns of behaviour that can strain the relationship between the child and those caring for them.

Feeling like you can’t get to your child? At your wits end with disruptive behaviour? Feel that your children don’t listen to anything you say? Classroom Mental Health

Educators are often faced with very unique and challenging issues in the classroom. At any given time, an educator will have students dealing with a variety of issues including trauma, anger/aggression, anxiety, grief, depression, or self-harm – often these challenges are expressed as negative behaviour in the classroom.
This workshop will help you to decode behaviours, understand the signs of common psychological issues, and empower you with the tools to help bring your students to a place of connection and safety. Educators will leave with a toolbox of strategies to help children who are struggling with relationships in the classroom, anxiety, emotional regulation, depression and attention- based issues. Connection, co-regulation, respectful communication and resilience are central themes in helping you to create a classroom that is inclusive, safe, and deeply accepting of all students.
