Event- Fostering Emotion Regulation:

Is your child struggling with anxiety, defiance, tantrums, meltdowns, and overall emotion dysregulation? Does the world feel overwhelming right now? Too many changes, too quickly? Struggling to find the right words or the tools to help your child navigate big feelings?

A child’s emotions can be draining for everyone involved. This course will empower parents and caregivers to proactively and lovingly help children during these challenging moments.

Emotional regulation is a key component that supports our overall health and well-being. As our capacity to regulate our emotions increases, so does our ability to engage positively with all parts of our world. This had the impact of enhancing our ability to communicate our needs, limits, and boundaries in a clear and effective way. Strengthening a child’s emotional vocabulary and supporting them to develop emotional regulation skills is an important part of ensuring that our children are growing with the skills and knowledge they will need for healthy relationships at all stages of life.

This course aims to provide practical information for caregivers and professionals about the importance of self-regulation in both ourselves and the children we are supporting, as well as to focus on strategies that we can use with the children we are supporting to enhance their development of self-regulation skills. The workshop also includes a section with tools to empower you to help your child navigate the current uncertainty and fear spreading across the globe.

This virtual workshop aims to enlighten, empower, and inspire those who take care of our children.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Introduction to the neurobiological and developmental of emotions in children
  • Exploration of triggers which fuel emotional dysregulation
  • Learn how to navigate current global issues
  • Discussion on the significance of connected relationships

Instructor Information

Tammy Schamuhn

Tammy Schamuhn is a Registered Psychologist, Registered Play Therapist, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, and the Co-Founder of the Institute of Child Psychology. She has a Bachelors of Education from the University of Alberta and practiced as an Elementary Teacher in Canada before going on to do her Masters degree in Psychology. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of Family Counselling Centres where she and her team treat children, adolescents, and their families through the use of a variety of types of therapies. Her clinic also utilized animals in their practice, as Tammy has developed a canine-assisted and equine-assisted therapy programs for treating children and teens. Furthermore, she also runs an extensive clinical internship program at her clinic where she trains masters-level interns who are training to become child psychologists, and provides clinical supervision to newly licensed provisional psychologists in the province of Alberta. She approaches her clinical and consultative work with parents and professionals with an attachment and neurobiological lens: all of her work is based on the neurology of the brain and how attachment is integral to adaptive functioning of both children and adults. Since completing my degree, I have worked in a private practice setting with children, teens, adults and families. I work primarily from an attachment based perspective. This means that I work with clients to explore how early relationships affect how we come to understand our self, other people and the world. It is an honour to work with clients and families to create a space for lasting change. I endeavour to always approach my clients with respect, honesty, integrity and warmth.
