Join us for an accredited 6-day professional training that explores how to integrate a variety of play therapy modalities into your professional work, as well as exploring two pertinent specialized topics: trauma & divorce/separation. This training builds on our Intro to Play Therapy Fundamentals course; however, this is not a prerequisite.

DAY 1: Integrating Art Therapy into Your Play Therapy Practice
DAY 2 & 3: Working with Children Impacted by Trauma
DAY 4: Directive Play Therapy Activities
DAY 5: Integrating Sand Tray Work into Your Play Therapy Practice
DAY 6: Working with Children Impacted by Divorce and Separation & Incorporating Caregivers in the Play Therapy Process

Play therapy is an evidence-based approach to help children with social or emotional deficits learn to communicate better, express underlying feelings that they may be struggling with, positively change their behaviour,, develop problem solving skills, and relate to others in more productive  ways. Sessions are NOT offered live, but will be recorded in advance and available for 60 days following June 1, 2021. This training is accredited by the Association for Play Therapy for 39 non-contact training hours.

Integrating Art Therapy into Your Play Therapy Practice

INSTRUCTORS: Tammy Schamuhn, R. Psych RPT-S & Olga Perju, RP, CCC-S, Registered Canadian Art Therapist

Art therapy can be a highly enriching addition to the play therapy process. It is a therapeutic process that uses art as an intervention to effectively work with children, teens, and adults to address numerous issues. This workshop will cover a basic conceptual understanding of art therapy, and explore a variety of art-based modalities to incorporate into the play therapy process.  Creative engagement and assessment activities will be presented, and participants will learn how to implement art-based strategies immediately into their practice

OBJECTIVES:

  • Define Art Therapy
  • Identify when and how to use art techniques as an integral play therapy tool
  • Describe the art therapy process in relation to play therapy
  • Expand repertoire of art techniques in play
  • Engage in experiential art activities that may be used in a play therapy setting with clients of all ages

 

Working with Trauma in the Play Therapy Room

INSTRUCTORS: Tammy Schamuhn, R. Psych RPT-S & Morgan Bissegger, R.Psych., RPT

Trauma is one of the most common reasons children are referred to counselling, and one of the areas where clinicians are the least versed in appropriate interventions.  This workshop will define the various types of trauma, while providing an overview of trauma symptoms, including traumatic play. Clinicians will learn about the central role of evaluating the symptoms of trauma experienced by preschool, school-aged, and adolescents using a variety of play-based measures. Clinicians will also explore developmentally appropriate treatments and interventions Attendees will also learn how to implement a variety of developmentally appropriate strategies and interventions  for children and teens, that incorporate both directive and non-directive play therapy processes.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Explore the impact of trauma on he neurological development of children and how it impacts the attachment system
  • Describe characteristics of trauma reactions and symptoms across the developmental life span
  • Incorporate play-based non-standardized trauma assessment approaches
  • Determine the stage of treatment in order to apply the most effective interventions.
  • Distinguish the many roles of play and different types of play associated with trauma play in children and adolescents.

 

Directive Play Therapy Activities: Where Structure Meets Creativity

INSTRUCTOR: Tania Johnson, R.Psych., RPT

In this dynamic workshop participants will learn how to engage clients through the play therapy process while providing concrete structure and direction to help navigate the therapeutic journey.  Therapists will learn how bring in games, discussions, and structured activities that assist children in examining issues and making interpretations, with the purpose of helping the child process experiences and feelings that might have previously hidden from awareness.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Explore a play therapy model which will help participants to decided when to use structured vs. Non-structured activities
  • Identify themes in children’s play and learn how to practically apply this knowledge in the play room
  • Create a robust toolbox of structured activities to help children with a variety of emotional, social and behavioural issues
  • Discover how to creatively use books and movies to facilitate the healing process
  • Discuss tele therapy techniques to utilize with children
  • Illustrate and practice selecting and utilizing different tools through case-studies

 

Integrating Sand Tray Work into Your Play Therapy Practice

INSTRUCTOR: Tammy Schamuhn, R.Psych., RPT-S

Working within the sand tray in the context of the play therapy process can help a child make their inner world tangible, process unconscious conflicts, promote the beginning of a health narrative, and begin to express themselves in a non-intrusive way.  It is appropriate for children undergoing or witnessing stressful events in their lives, those struggling with academic and social problems, learning disabilities, behavioural disorders, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, or anger; as well as those with attention deficit disorders.

This training is aimed at introducing mental health professionals to sand-based work within the context of play therapy. Participants will explore the basic theoretical foundations of Sandtray and Sandplay therapies, and will gain practical skills and strategies to work with children in order to begin integrating these modalities into their play therapy practice.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Introduce Sandtray and Sandplay therapies as a play therapy modalities
  • Explore the theoretical principles underlying the use of Sandplay and Sandtray therapies.
  • Differentiate between Sandtray and Sandplay modalities
  • Identify the procedures involved in Sandplay and Sandtray therapy
  • Explore the role of the therapist in Sandtray & Sandplay therapy
  • Illustrate concepts with Sandtray and Sandplay casework.

 

Working with Children Impacted by Divorce & Separation in the Play Therapy Room

INSTRUCTOR: Tammy Schamuhn, R.Psych., RPT-S

With parental divorce and separation on the rise, many children struggle with the grief, transitions, emotional disruptions, and (often) conflict associated with this process. This workshop will hive you concrete tools to help children and teens to heal and process this loss, and gain effective tools to manage their emotions. Creative engagement and assessment activities will be presented, and participants will learn how to implement strategies immediately into their practice

OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand how the parent-child attachment is impacted
  • Explore how divorce/separation effects children and parents, and situations parents should avoid during and after divorce/separation
  • Explore assessment tools to help the clinician better identify specific areas where a child is struggling
  • Gain creative tools to integrate into your play therapy practice that helps children process their experiences related to divorce and separation
  • Assist parents in acquiring co-parenting skills that will protect children from emotional and psychological damage

 

Incorporating Caregivers in the Play Therapy Process

INSTRUCTOR: Tania Johnson, R.Psych., RPT

In this workshop attendees will learn to integrate family therapy and parent-lead activities into the play therapy room. Therapists learn how to train and supervise parents as they conduct special child-centered play sessions with their own children. These directives are designed to resolve presenting problems while strengthening family relationships.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Assist parents in generalizing the use of the play skills to everyday life situations
  • Learn how to discuss themes of the play sessions with parents to further their understanding of the child and the relationship
  • Help parents understand the value and importance play and their involvement in their children’s treatment
  • Help caregivers set up parent-child play sessions, and give constructive feedback to improve their skills

FORMAT:
Sessions will be recorded in advance and available for 60 days after being released on June 1, 2021.
Non-contact training hours will be awarded upon successful completion of the training.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
This training is aimed at introducing mental health professionals (minimum level of education: Bachelor’s Degree) to the field of play therapy. Participants will explore the basic theoretical and ethical foundations of play therapy, and will gain practical skills and strategies to work with children in order to begin integrating this modality into their clinical practice.  Prior to the event release date our administration will contact you for proof of education/mental health license or enrolment in mental health program. While a certificate of completion can be granted,  Play Therapy credit through the Association of Play Therapy may not be awarded to non-graduate level mental health professionals or graduate level students in the mental health field.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT APPROVAL:
Association for Play Therapy: 39.0 training hours (APT Provider #20-984)
APT recognizes this course as meeting the requirements for non-contact training hours towards* their national certification process to become a Registered Play Therapist

WHAT WE PROVIDE:
Handouts will be provided to participants. An electronic certificate outlining continuing education hours will be granted after successful completion of the training.

CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS:
Withdrawals over 30 days before program start are permitted, yet subject to a $100 processing fee
