Understanding Childhood ADHD
According to the CDC, “Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a serious public health problem affecting a large number of children and adults.” Some estimates say that 6.1 million children in the US have been diagnosed with ADHD. There are many myths as well as misinformation about ADHD which has impacted the level of care in the community. In this interactive presentation, you will learn about the myths vs. reality of ADHD, why the condition is overdiagnosed, and how to best approach this condition. Understanding the fundamentals of having a “team approach” intervention at multiple levels in the community will also be explored.
Due to the stigma of mental health, especially in children, many individuals and families have not sought treatment for ADHD. Fortunately, there is research on ADHD about various treatment modalities which have been beneficial for positive outcomes. This presentation will provide a roadmap to reduce the stigma of mental health treatment to increase the level of success for students. You will also learn about sample modifications that can be made in the school curriculum, as well as techniques to use in the home setting to best support a child with ADHD. Current research trends along with resources to utilize after the presentation is complete will also be provided.
