Empowering providers with training in evidence based practices for working with LGBTQ+ youth.

Youth Gender & Sexual Diversity

LGBTQ+ youth experience higher rates of bullying, discrimination, and social rejection as compared to their cisgender heterosexual peers, leading to higher rates of mental health disparities. Acceptance along with affirming and inclusive environments mitigate adverse mental health outcomes for LGBTQ+ youth. This course aims to increase provider awareness and knowledge of mental health disparities experienced by LGBTQ+ youth, and importantly, how to improve outcomes. Providers are uniquely positioned to cultivate inclusive, affirming spaces that promote safety for LGBTQ+ youth to express themselves. As more LGBTQ+ are self-identifying, and at younger ages, it is critical for providers to receive training in evidence based practices for working with LGBTQ+ youth.

  • Understand and differentiate terminology related to gender identity.

  • Apply an affirming care approach to safely assess youth gender identity and sexual orientation.

  • Recognize and apply strategies that promote awareness and respect of sexual and gender diversity to establish an affirming community for our LGBTQ+ patients, families, and colleagues.
